If you are new to wholesale buying, two terms come up in almost every conversation: MOQ and case pack. Understanding the MOQ meaning, and how it interacts with case packs, helps you request accurate quotes, avoid ordering too much and compare suppliers fairly. This guide explains both in plain language with worked examples.

What is MOQ? The meaning of minimum order quantity

MOQ stands for minimum order quantity: the smallest amount a supplier is willing to sell in a single order. Suppliers set minimums to keep orders economical to pick, pack and ship. An MOQ can be expressed in several ways:

  • Per item: for example, at least two cases of one product.
  • Per brand or product line: a minimum across several items from the same brand.
  • Per order value: a minimum spend for the whole order.

Always ask which type applies. A minimum order value does not tell you how many cases of a single item you must buy, and a per-item MOQ does not tell you whether you can mix variants.

What is a case pack?

A case pack is the number of individual sellable units packed together in one shipping case. If a supplier says a product has a case pack of 12, one case contains 12 units. Suppliers usually sell wholesale quantities in full cases, so the case pack decides how your quantity rounds.

Be careful with the word "unit." For candy, a unit might be one bag, and each bag contains many pieces. A 46-piece Zotz bag is one unit, not 46. For pantry goods, one 13.5 fl oz can of coconut milk is one unit. For fragrance, one 6 ml roll-on is one unit.

MOQ vs case pack: how they work together

The case pack tells you how products are grouped; the MOQ tells you how many of those groups (or how much value) you must order. For example, a supplier might set an MOQ of three cases on an item with a case pack of 12, meaning the minimum is 36 units.

How to convert cases to units

Use one simple formula: cases × units per case = total units. Three cases of 12 units equal 36 units. If a price is quoted per case, divide by the confirmed units per case to get a comparable per-unit figure. Make sure your stock sheet and the supplier's quotation use the same unit; mismatches are one of the most common causes of ordering errors.

Can you mix variants to reach the minimum?

Sometimes. Some suppliers allow mixed cases or let different flavors count toward one minimum; others require full cases of each variant. Ask directly and record the answer. A mixed assortment and a single-flavor case are different requests.

Wholesale minimum order: matching it to your business

Your first order should reflect your shelf space, storage and expected sales, not just the supplier's minimum. Ordering far more than you can sell ties up cash and space. Our small business inventory management guide shows how to calculate a reorder point, and our guide to comparing wholesale quotes explains why the lowest per-unit price is not always the best deal.

For dated products such as food, ask what date information can be confirmed before you accept the shipment.

How to negotiate a lower MOQ

  • Explain that you are testing a product and outline your expected reorder pattern.
  • Ask whether mixed cases or a lower minimum on a first order are possible.
  • Offer to consolidate several products into one order to reach an order-value minimum.
  • Be clear and realistic; a reliable repeat customer is valuable to a supplier.

Write an unambiguous quantity request

Instead of writing "48," write "estimated 48 individual bottles; please confirm case pack and minimum." State whether you are open to rounding up to full cases, and include your destination and preferred timing. Our quote form asks for estimated units; use the message field to describe case preferences or mixed products. The wholesale supplier checklist lists other details to include.
